Classic NYFW tweets

I managed to avoid getting sucked into the mesmerizing, voyeuristic, black hole that is Twitter until about 6 months ago. Since then, I have enjoyed many a half-hour here and there wasting time spying on the lives of the fash-pack and other celebs as they indulge in their mundane daily activities. However, things have been looking up during NY Fashion week, with some entertaining tweets coming from all sectors of the fashion community. Just in case any of you are not on Twitter (and not at all because I have no interesting image-based entries to post on the blog ;-) ), here are a few of my favorite tweets from the past week;

Sleeping Male Models

I rarely get excited about the Menswear collections (sorry boys) but looking at the recent updates on Style and Twitter coming from the Milan shows, I've been managing to keep up with the highlights.

Being a total sucker for anything remotely different than the usual run-of-the-mill catwalk presentations, I have been eagerly awaiting for a video to be posted of the Moncler Gamme Bleu F/W 2010 show of January 18th. Not, I hasten to add, so that I could gawk at the man candy trotting down the runway, but because of the unusual format of the show. This unique presentation comprised of models sleeping in barrack-style beds in matching uniforms and nightcaps, who were then roused from their (not needed) beauty sleep by the call of a bugle, and who then proceeded to remove a bag from under their beds, the contents of which they then dressed themselves with.

Here's some more stills of the show taken from Style, and I've also embedded the video below ( big shout out to my laptop for co-operating today) which is well worth viewing as some of the looks are really rather good, even if the outfits don't involve stilettos.

Chanel Pre-Fall Collection. Shanghai.

Earlier this month, the fashion fabulous flew to Shanghai to see Chanel's Pre-Fall Collection, in all its uber-Chinoiserie glory. Not me however, but I have been drooling after the collection on Style.com. The oriental, meets futuristic collection contained piece after piece of elegant day and evening looks ranging from long military inspired overcoats, to luxe evening gowns. Whilst the Collection was predominantly on the black spectrum, flashes of red, yellow and blue were seen throughout, accessorized with big bold necklaces, tassles, thigh boots and orient inspired hair sticks and hats. There were so many looks that I just loved, I found it very hard to limit them down to these, so hence why there are so many. I strongly recommend going to view the whole collection on Style.com, it will be well worth it.

John Galliano for Claridges, and other designer christmas trees

Being a huge fan of Christmas, nothing gets me going more than the sight of the good ol' Christmas tree. Shame then, that I'm not in London today for the big unveiling of the John Galliano christmas tree at Claridges. Naturally, the tree is not your run-of-the-mill tinsel and shiny bauble extravaganza, but more of an icy blue and white frozen tropical tree (see above photos and initial design sketch below). Erected overnight, the 20ft tree is constructed out of papier mache, polystyrene and paper, and featured amongst the branches are a handmade leopard, some parrots and a dragonfly.
Like my own (not nearly as impressive ) christmas tree, it will be on display until the twelfth night (January 6th).

Other designer christmas trees will be on display in Paris from December 8th-14th at

'cite de l'architechture' as part of the city's annual 'Les Sapins de Noel des Createur' event. Designers ranging from Paul Smith, Hermes, Gaultier, and Louis Vuitton (to name but a few) will be designing one-off trees which will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity 'Sol en Si' (Solidarite en SIDA) which helps young people affected by AIDS. Last year, 44 stunning creations raised a total of 101,000 Euros for the charity, so hopefully this year will also bring much festive cheer and charitable proceeds. Just because its December 1st, here's a few shots from last year's trees to kick start the Christmas Spirit.

Much as I am enjoying being in the USA right now, I wish I was back in London in order to watch the masterful Gareth Pugh in action at SHOWstudio. Gareth will be in residence at SHOWstudio starting at 11am tomorrow (also on Monday and Tuesday) creating a one off piece which will then be sold in the SHOWstudio shop on Bruton Place. For the lucky people in town, you can go along and watch him at the store, but for those of us not lucky enough to be there, we can watch the live streaming each day from 11am until 6pm GMT.

Whilst we are on the subject of Mr Pugh, I though it would give me an opportunity to obsess over his S/S 2010 collection all over again. My Favourite look has to be the dress above, and in particular the way it is styled with the headpiece. (By the way - check out Illustrator /blogger extraordinaire Fifi Lapin's Halloween entry, for her her bunny illustration of this look. - Love it). The collection as a whole was a lot more wearable than previous seasons, yet managed to retain the sense of originality and uniqueness for which we love him.

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Award 2009

A big congratulations to Womenswear designer Sophie Théallet who was named the winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in New York City on Monday night. As a result of winning this prestigious award, Theallet, whose clothes have been worn by Mrs Obama on several occasions over the past year, will be the lucky recipient of $200,000 as well as a year of mentoring.


Innovative jewelry designer Monique Péan was awarded runner-up, alongside menswear designer Patrik Ervell. 


Out of these two, I have to say that I was most disappointed that Monique Pean did not get the 'big' award for her amazing Jewelry, which combines luxury materials with unexpected components. An example of this being the statement diamond necklace pictured below which features a necklace of champagne diamonds with a large piece of fossilized woolly mammoth ivory which is about 12,000+ years old. (Now that's what I call some serious vintage.)
